Life In Good Measure

It is about people, history and your own place on the map

Empty Spaces

If you are a frequent reader of the year files here in Journeys of Life, you may have noticed that there is an increasing number of empty spaces in many of the files. Dates with no names after them. This serves two purposes. Firstly, it makes editing easier when adding new entries. Secondly - and a far more important purpose - it gives you a reminder that you as a reader (and hopefully a patreon) can always fill those empty places with your own relatives and ancestors, to any of the years that we have here (which is quite a few). Continue reading

City Flags

Streets & Squares - one of our regular article series here in Journeys of Life - is published every 20th of a month. So far it has been 44 times! We’ve written - from our own particular perspective - about cities around the globe, and more will follow. Every 20th of a month! Now, we will be adding - to the already existing articles and all the following ones - something that might interest some of you: namely the flag, the coat of arms or the logo of the city in question. Continue reading

Four Centuries Done

A 17th Century Mill in Castelnaudary, France Photo courtesy Max Pixel As of today, Journeys of Life contains year files for four whole centuries. That is, the 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. Those plus some of this 21st century we now live in span the years 1601 and 2021. The year files aim to give you a quick look at any of these years with some background information and the most notable persons born at that time. Continue reading

Become a Patron

Journeys of Life has been around for quite a while now. Our aim has always been to have stories of interest accompanied by cool or telling images tied to the theme. The bulk of the site are the year files though. For this is a site specifically geared for genealogists, and others interested in either personal or public history. Then there are all the article series, many of which have an article appearing on a certain fixed date. Continue reading

Twitter Start

From today on Journeys of Life is also in Twitter - better later than never, right?! At the same time we are replacing the old email address of kivita@gmail.com with a new one: jovestoneblog@gmail.com - also long overdue. So if you want to contact us by email, that’s the one to use starting today. Twitter, yes. There will be regular tweeting now. The tweets will be referring to either a recently published post or any of the older ones that seem a good option to tweet about. Continue reading

Places of Birth

Our aim here in Journeys of Life is to indicate the place of birth as accurately as possible and by so doing give some of the historical context at a glance. Sometimes Wikipedia suggests the modern version of the area or country name, so it can be a challenge to find out under whose rule the city or area actually was at the time of birth. Because that is what we want to give here - the place of birth as it was known at the time of birth. Continue reading

Street View

Google Street View car in action in Helsinki, Finland Google’s Street View is a most wonderful tool for anyone who loves maps and travelling - which comprises if not most then at least millions of us! You get by fine with Google Maps alone, but the Street View really enhances the experience. The article series Streets & Squares here in Journeys of Life has so far only had links to Google Maps, but we are gradually adding also the Street View feature in all of the cities and towns that we present in the series. Continue reading

Three Centuries Done

As of today, Journeys of Life contains year files for three whole centuries. That is, the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. Those plus some of this 21st century we now live in span the years 1700 and 2019. The year files aim to give you a quick look at any of these years with some background information and the most notable persons born at that time. We now go on completing year files for individual years for the 14th, 15th, 16th and 17th centuries, and aim to gradually publish all years between 1500 and 1699. Continue reading

Occupational Chronology

If you ever wonder about the occupations given here after a person’s name, in the year files and elsewhere, here’s some clarification over the matter. The idea has been to see the chronology - that this site heavily leans upon - even in the small place allocated to each person in the year files. We go from youth to seniority. From relatively easy jobs to ones requiring more skill and/or more experience and maturity. Continue reading

Wikipedia Birthday

Congratulations Wikipedia for your birthday on January 15th, and thank you for the 20 years of your existence! You have been part of my life for years, and these days on a daily level. Please go ahead and read about the making, sustaining and improving of Wikipedia thanks to the countless of people around the world who make it if not The Page but certainly one of the best pages or sites you can click online! Year Files Adding Up

Lately there has been an abundance of year files being published here in Journeys of Life. And evidently there are a number of years yet to be published for our ambitious intention is to have an individual post for every year between the year 1000 and the current year. That’s a tall order, but one that we constantly aspire towards. So at times these year files take a major role in the publication schedule. Continue reading

All and Random Posts

Kevin Kivi - Oct 2, 2020Great addition to your website. I love both features! Thanks for your comment Kevin! Yes, I like this feature (Random articles) for example in Wikipedia (which I used a lot), so I thought it would be a nice addition here as well.

All and Random Posts

Added today a new page in the upper part of the site page that will show you all the existing posts written here in Journeys of Life. As you click ALL POSTS and scroll down the page, new article posts will appear ten at a time. And if you want to read one, all you need to do is click on the title! Also added today Random Posts. That section you find on the right side of the page under List of Articles. Continue reading

Australia Divided

Previously in Journeys of Life we have had articles about the different states or provinces of the United States of America and Canada. This time we do the same with Australia. This in order to help you to figure out the abbreviations given concerning people born in Australia. Australia has six states, two major mainland territories and a few external territories, mainly islands. Here below the abbreviations for the six states. Continue reading

Did you know that...

Journeys of Life, originally at the address www.jovestone.wordpress.com, is being transferred to another domain, namely this one? The exiting address will remain only as a source and will not be updated after this month. The blog continues to employ Wordpress though, continuously grateful for all the wonderful features of it. Hope you all like the new looks of the blog!

Summertime

Lately the posting here has been scarce due to summer vacation, computer problems and also the forthcoming transfer to a new domain. The site will remain more or less the same, and will be back to its regular schedule with its regularly appearing posts along with the more individual posting of articles and year files, some time during the summer. Until then, we wish all our readers a wonderful summer!

A Platform for Genealogy

If you hadn’t figured it out yet, this site is basically offering to be a platform for genealogy. The groundwork is gradually being done to become just that, so that people like yourself could attach some of their own data in these pages. The data or information is never anything that could harm you or the members of your family, whether living or dead, for all that is needed here is what you see being repeated in every single year file: name, place and date of birth, main occupation or what the person in question was mainly known for, and also the possible date of death. Continue reading

State Directory

To facilitate the knowing, learning and memorizing the 52 U.S. states, each year file of Journeys of Life will now gradually display several links to the page “U.S. State Two Letter Abbreviations” where these state abbreviations are explained. This way they will hopefully become increasingly familiar to our non-American readers. You only need to open one link, and then you may want to keep that page open while reading Journeys of Life. Continue reading

Two Centuries Done

If you ever check the lists of birth dates here, you may have noticed that the 20th century has long since been completed. Now the same applies to the 19th century. So that makes a minimum 200 consecutive years that each have their own page with some background information and some appropriate picture attached, and of course the list of birth dates. These pages are being continually updated whenever some relevant information shows up. Continue reading
