After Bangor last month, another smaller city in these Streets & Squares. The lovely German city of Füssen, situated one kilometer from the Austrian border in Bavaria, along the River Lech that starts at the nearby Forggensee and ends up far away in Formarinsee in Eastern Austria. This town is known more than anything else for its castles, one of which you see pictured here - the Neuschwanstein Castle - very familiar to many for us from the world of Disney.
Füssen was settled in Roman times, on the Via Claudia Augusta. The original name of it was “Foetes”, or “Foetibus” (inflected), which derives from Latin “Fauces” (i.e. gorge), probably referring to the gorge of the river Lech.
Google’s Street View in Füssen is available only as pictures of the surroundings. Which is a pity of course since this is a lovely little city to have a walk in. So the links here take you to one single spot on the street in question.
