Reflecting Safety

One thing about living up in the northern latitudes is that you know for sure that it will eventually get dark pretty early in the day.

And to be on the safe side in traffic, it is a good idea to have a safety reflector attached somewhere on your clothes, backpack or bag. It is in fact mandatory to wear one in countries like Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.

We are all used to seeing reflective clothing worn professionally. By railroad and harbor workers, builders, police officers, etc. They often have these reflective stripes on their jackets and overalls so it’s safe for them to work in close proximity to traffic.

But yes, it is certainly a good idea for all of us to wear reflectors. And you can buy them in all kinds of shapes and sizes.

The safety reflectors are said to have been invented by a Finn who wanted to protect his horses from motorized traffic. Naturally, these days our pets should also have reflectors on them in order to stay safe. You can e.g. buy a nice reflecting west for your dog to wear. Coupled with a reflective collar, or a light attached to the leash.

And as far as motorized traffic goes, cars of course also have reflectors as do motorcycles and bicycles. We may just not notice those as easily as they have their lights on.

Check the video below what a huge difference it makes to have or not to have a reflector.
