One Day in the Life of Christopher Haley

Another one in our article series One Day in the Life of. November 24th, 2018 was supposed to be just another Saturday night for pastor Christopher Haley from Winnipeg as he was watching the match between Winnipeg Jets and hometeam St. Louis Blues at Enterprise Center in St. Louis, Missouri.

The Canadian supermarket chain Safeway (owned by Sobeys) has a continual promotion called “Score & Win” where it randomly selects a shopper to potentially win prizes for a player’s achievements. If a player makes three goals in a game, one lucky shopper in the audience wins $1,000, with four goals the prize is $100,000, and a five-goal game nets a fan $1 million Canadian dollars.

Well, Winnipeg’s Patrik Laine set that night a franchise record with five goals. Thus, according to Safeway, on top of the $1 million, Haley also will take home an additional $100,000 for the fourth goal and $1,000 in Safeway gift cards. He will receive $50,000 every year for the next 20 years.

As a pastor, Christopher Haley regards the prize money as a gift from God. Still, Patrik Laine may have got that Saturday a new fan for life.
