Tero Pitkämäki from Finland throwing javelin
Javelin throw is a separate event in light athletics, and also an event of the men’s decathlon and the women’s heptathlon. Sweden’s Eric Lemming, who threw his first world best (49.32 meters) in 1899 and ruled the event from 1902 to 1912, was the first dominant javelin thrower. Here below you see a list of the most successful javelin throwers, both male and female. Some of whom have in a similar way dominated the discipline, but perhaps not in as many years.
Note also that distinction must be made between the old and the new throws and world records, since in 1986 the javelin’s center of gravity was changed. This was done for two reasons: 1) in order to have the javelin land more vertically for easier measuring and 2) in order for the longest throws land within the safety area of stadiums. The old implement javelin is shortened here OIJ.
The current world record in javelin in bold red.

Finally, let us also see which month has been the most prominent birth month of all when it comes to winning the most pursued medal of them all - the Olympic gold medal! The medal in this picture here was won in Seoul, South Korea in 1988 by the men’s winner Tapio Korjus from Finland (84.28 meters), and the women’s winner Petra Felke from East Germany (74.68 meters). All results in women’s javelin were made with a rough surfaced javelin (old design). Felke’s result was the new Olympic record, and her subsequent new records stood until 1999 when a new javelin design for women was implemented. For men the javelin redesign date is April 1, 1986.
